Virtuose de violon. Nommé lieutenant par Napoléon en 1805. Dans les douanes, occupe des postes à Marseille, Gênes, Livourne, Foligno, Boulogne,La Ciotat, Morlaix puis Abbeville en 1825 en tant que directeur. Participe à la fondation du Musée d'Archéologie de Saint-Germain en Laye en 1862.
Par ordonnance du 16 Septembre1818, insérée au Bulletin des Lois N°238,   il est autorisé à ajouter "de PERTHES" à son nom.
